# From East Integration to Star Exploration: Twenty Years of Dedicated Craftsmanship—A Guangzhou Luggage and Bag Company Achieves Leapfrog Growth
Within the Southern Leather and Leather Goods Industrial Park in Shiling Town, Huadu District, Guangzhou, a state-of-the-art factory stands quietly. This site is not only a pivotal node on the global luggage and bag industry map but also a living testament to a company’s transformative journey—from traditional OEM manufacturing to independent innovation, and from deep regional roots to a global footprint. Over the past two decades, Guangzhou Tanxing Luggage Co., Ltd. (formerly Guangzhou Dongrong Handbag Products Co., Ltd.) has written a remarkable tale of evolution from “manufacturing” to “intelligent manufacturing” on the fertile ground of China’s “Leather Goods Capital.”
### Taking Root in Shiling: From Artisan Workshops to a Leading Industrial Cluster
The history of the luggage and bag industry in Shiling Town is a microcosm of China’s manufacturing sector transformation and upgrading. In 1978, local villagers used sewing machines to produce their first handmade leather bags, marking the industry’s nascent stage; by 2005, when Guangzhou Dongrong Handbag Products Co., Ltd. was founded, Shiling had already attracted more than 3,000 workshops, forming the world’s most complete industrial chain. The founding team of Dongrong keenly recognized the opportunities presented by industrial upgrading and, guided by the principles of “prudence, pioneering spirit, and innovation,” established a 3,000-square-meter standardized factory in the Southern Industrial Park of Shiling Town. They introduced advanced equipment such as CNC cutting machines and double-needle edge-sewing machines, becoming one of the early adopters of the ISO 9000 quality management system and ERP systems.
“At the time, many companies were still recording production data by hand on paper, but we had already achieved end-to-end digital tracking of the entire order process,” recalled the company’s Chief Technology Officer. This forward-looking strategic positioning quickly set Dongrong apart: in 2013, the company was recognized as a “Guangdong Provincial High-Tech Enterprise”; in 2018, it obtained BSCI social compliance certification; and its 12 patented technologies—including a vacuum-drying leather-stripping mechanism and an anti-loss handbag design—have addressed longstanding industry challenges such as high leather-material wastage and limited functionality. By 2020, the company had established a full product portfolio spanning suitcases, backpacks, sports waist packs, and other categories, with annual production capacity exceeding 2 million units, thereby becoming a benchmark enterprise among those above designated size in Shiling Town.
### Breaking the Impasse: From OEM/ODM to the Rise of Indigenous Brands
Despite the steady growth of its OEM business, management is keenly aware that “without a brand, we will forever be confined to the lowest-margin segment of the value chain.” In 2021, the company embarked on a strategic transformation, launching a second entrepreneurial journey under the brand name “Tanxing.” This decision is firmly underpinned by the robust industrial ecosystem in Shiling Town: the area has already attracted 8,800 luggage and bag manufacturers and 16,800 supporting suppliers, creating a fully integrated ecosystem that spans raw-material supply, design and R&D, and logistics and distribution. Moreover, the region boasts eight national-level public-service platforms, including a rapid intellectual-property-rights enforcement center and a postdoctoral research workstation.
“In Shiling, companies can access the latest global fashion trends at the lowest possible cost,” said the brand’s head, citing an example: every week, the company’s designers visit raw-material markets such as Oushang Leather to source materials, then integrate new fabrics like PVC-composite and waterproof textiles with smart locks and solar-charging modules to create high-tech luggage that features anti-theft alarms and wireless charging. This innovative “traditional craftsmanship plus smart hardware” approach has enabled Tanxing products to quickly penetrate European and American markets; its solar-charging backpack alone has surpassed 100,000 units in sales on Amazon, while crowdfunding has also helped it successfully enter emerging markets in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
### Digital Empowerment: From Traditional Manufacturing to a Global Smart Manufacturing Hub
The leapfrog development of Tanxing Company is inseparable from the dual-engine drive of “digital intelligence plus globalization” in Shiling Town. In 2022, Huadu District rolled out a special policy to support Shiling in building a hundred-billion-yuan-level international fashion industry base, and Tanxing seized this opportunity to invest RMB 50 million in constructing a smart factory: it introduced AGV logistics robots to enable automated raw-material delivery, deployed an AI-powered visual inspection system to boost product-quality compliance to 99.5%, and leveraged a supply-chain collaboration platform built on Gait Software to achieve real-time sharing of order, inventory, and capacity data with upstream and downstream partners.
“Now, once a customer places an order, the system automatically breaks it down into more than 200 production processes—ranging from fabric procurement and cutting to sewing—and then matches the optimal production plan.” On the digital dashboard displayed by the Production Director, the progress of global orders and the operating status of equipment are clearly visible at a glance. This “transparent factory” model has boosted Tanxing’s monthly production capacity from 300,000 to 500,000 pieces, further attracting international brands such as H&M and ZARA to shift their core product lines here. In 2024, the company was recognized as a “Pilot Demonstration Enterprise for Intelligent Manufacturing in Guangzhou,” and its “Digital Transformation Solution for the Luggage and Bag Industry Cluster” was included by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as a typical case.
### Global Expansion: From Regional Brand to International Fashion IP
Today, Tanxing has established a multi-dimensional business model of “Guangzhou design + global manufacturing + cross-border sales”: it has set up overseas factories in Vietnam and Cambodia to leverage local labor advantages and fulfill large-volume orders; established design centers in New York and Milan to attract international design teams and develop a line of accessible luxury products; and reached consumers in more than 200 countries and regions through platforms such as AliExpress and Amazon, while also launching initiatives on TikTok.
